What do you do when you want to get out of the house on a hot summer day? On a recent visit to J's family in NJ we decided to take the whole family to the Liberty Science Center (LSC). This was a childhood favorite of J's and J's youngest brother (J#3) volunteered there in high school.
Liberty Science Center - Jersey City, NJ
Entrance fee: $22.75 adult, $18.75 child 2-12. There are films, theater shows, and a planetarium that cost extra. Plus $7 per car for parking.
Food and Drink: Café Skylines offers wonderful eating option from health snacks to full meals. Reasonable priced and easy. Seating is somewhat limited.
Bathrooms: So many bathrooms. They were all very clean, even later in the day, and had great diaper changing areas. One note (my pet peeve) they were lacking stools so little ones can easily wash their hands.
Gift Shop:
J loves a good gift shop. We ended up leaving with Liberty Science Center Magnets (J has a thing for buying souvenir magnets) and a new Thomas train for Little M. J reports that they have a fantastic selection of science inspiring kits as well as items that directly correspond to their exhibits.
Accessibility:
Easy access, large elevators, plenty of open space, no stroller traffic jams and ample stroller parking.
Exhibits and More:
Besides the great exhibits there are shows, presentations and hands on actives located throughout the Liberty Science Center. We got to engage in an Animal Encounter, watch the turtles feeding, play with some big bubbles and air, plus see some of the Pop-Up Science carts. There are many volunteers to answer questions, suggest activities and steer you in the right direction.
Highlights:
Little M - Little M loved the Hoberman sphere at the entrance, he could have watched it expand and contract all day. His true favorite was the I Expore area where there are a bunch of really great hands on activities for young learners. We were there early so it was not crowded and it even has its own bathroom, perfect for the little ones.
J - Our Hudson Home is a cool exhibit all about the Hudson River ecosystem. The touch tank was closed when we visited but both J and Little M loved looking at all the animals. There are also cool ecological experiments at the on-site lab for older kids.
K - I loved the Bees to Bots exhibit and the Eat and Be Eaten. Anything involving animal adaptations and poisonous frogs and I am there. Little M loved watching the turtle eat and I as impressed with the giant snapping turtle.
Tips:

Lots of hands on activities for little ones at the I Explore area of LCS |

Tips:
- Like most venues, Weekdays and Early Morning times are the least crowed.
- Visit most popular spots before it gets too busy.
- Check the daily events when you get there, there are so many cool Live Science Demos and activities both inside and outside to explore.
- Use the Plan Your Visit page on the website. (we decided that the I Explore and Eat and Be Eaten were the most important areas and filled in other actives as time permitted)
- Designate a rally point and time if separating into groups.
- Great for All ages but Little M at about 2 was just able to appreciate and enjoy.
