Family Adventure - Spectacle Island

Beautiful views of Boston and Boston Harbor from scenic Spectacle Island

Spectacle Island is a quick 30min ferry ride from Boston's Long Warf and a beautiful day trip.

I love seaglass, I love wandering by the ocean as I hunt for the perfect piece.  I think/hope that I have passes on my love of the ocean waves and searching for seaglass to Little M.  There is no better place for seaglass hunting than on Spectacle Island, the only downside is that you can't take it home.

Little M and I took a week off together in June and one of my summer bucket list items is a trip to Spectacle Island.  We spent a beautiful morning exploring the island and collecting seaglass.

Amazing seaglass finds on the beaches of Spectacle Island - only downside is that you can't take it home with you.

Little M loved the ferry ride to Spectacle Island

Visitors Center:
Visitors Center has cool island history info-graphics and models.  Its really interesting to see how the island has changed over time and how it went from hotels/casinos to a horse rendering plant and finally trash incinerator/dump .  During the Big Dig the excavated dirt was used to resurface the Island and it was opened to the public as a State Park in 2006.

Nice bathrooms with diaper changing stations are located in the Visitors Center.  There are also Park Rangers on hand to answer questions, help you plan your visit and look over your sea glass finds with you.

Ranger Tours and Events:
There are Ranger Guided tours every day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.  Spectacle Island hosts a variety of Tours and Programs from Bird watching to Kayaking to Yoga.  Check them all out here.  I would really love to get a group together for the clambake.  There are also sponsored events from REI and L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery School like Smartphone Photography for the Outdoors and Fly Casting.

Swimming Beach and Changing rooms:
Nice big outdoor changing rooms.  Small sandy/pebbly beach with life guard.

Trails:
5 miles of paved and gravel walking trails suitable for a sturdy stroller.  Beautiful panoramic views of Boston and the harbor.

Café:
Salty's has a great selections of meals and snacks from healthy to hearty.  Has menu options for even picky eaters.  Prices are a little high but quality is great.  Wonderful covered tent area perfect for picnics located right outside Visitors Center.

Little M enjoys his lunch from Salty's as he inspects his seaglass finds.

Tips:
  • Spectacle Island is Carry-in-Carry-out meaning you need to bring all your trash back with you (including dirty diapers).  Prepare accordingly.  I use doggy poop bags for diapers.
  • There is not a lot of shady areas on the island so pack your sunscreen and beach umbrella.
  • You will need a ticket for each ferry passenger, children under three are free but they need a ticket to board the ferry.
Have you been to Spectacle Island?  Does your little one enjoy ferry rides?
